Calhoun’s GEM Theatre…where someone viewed Gone With The Wind for the very first time…the location a resident watched the news and received World War II updates…the place a child sat every Saturday captivated by cartoons…where a couple had their first date…and where everyone in Gordon County came for entertainment.

The GEM Theatre was established in downtown Calhoun in 1927 and expanded to its current size in 1939. The theatre was Calhoun’s only movie and performing arts venue until it closed in the late ‘70’s.

The GEM building (which had been vacant for the majority of the past 20 years) was purchased in 2001 thanks to the vision of Raymond and Pearl King and their children Ted and Ginger, who wished to see the theatre restored to its previous glory.

The main theatre area had remained intact; however water damage had destroyed the stage and ruined much of the interior. The Friends of the GEM hired an architectural firm and contractor that specialized in historic restoration and after 10 tireless years of fundraising, the GEM Theatre re-opened on August 27, 2011. In 2012, the the theatre was recognized as a  Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation Rehabilitation Award recipient.

The GEM features the best of both the past and present, as its appearance takes you back to 1939 and its amenities provide a state-of-the-art theatre experience. The original GEM is best remembered as a movie theatre, but the renovated 461 seat GEM showcases a variety of entertainment including concerts, plays, and movies.

Most importantly, the GEM is the community’s theatre. It is the “gem” in Calhoun’s crown.

It is yours – become a member, purchase a seat, advertise your business, and rent. But most of all, sit back and enjoy the shows.

The GEM Theatre is a 461 seat historically restored theatre. The theatre’s acoustics and seating arrangement are incredible. Literally there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Artists and musicians alike have praised the GEM on the quality of sound and the atmosphere of the GEM. We are truly blessed to have such a facility here in Calhoun.

We strive to bring a wide diversity of shows featuring both local and national acts into the theatre each year.  It is our hope to offer something for everyone. We have recently begun a country, comedy and Christian/Gospel series of programming.

We’re glad you’re here…

Welcome to the gem!

We have done our best to provide you with an entertaining and enjoyable experience here at the GEM Theatre. On behalf of everyone who attends a performance, we ask that you remember theatre rules of etiquette. Below are some tips for how to be a good audience member.

Arrive early. If you are late, you may be held out or reseated until an appropriate time for you to get to your assigned seat. People who arrive late disturb the performers on stage and audience members. It is best to arrive at least 15 minutes early so that you have time to purchase concessions and find your seat before the show starts.

If the show has reserved seating, please sit in the seat you are assigned so you do not cause confusion for other audience members.

Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers and watch alarms. You’ll be embarrassed if it goes off in the middle of a tense moment of the performance and it will break the mood for everyone. We encourage you to share your experience at the GEM via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting to performers on stage and audience members.

Many shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the Theatre is NEVER allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.

When the overture begins, the show has begun. Please cease all conversation at this point.

Please refrain from talking, humming or singing along with the performance, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or performers.

Do not jangle keys, bangles or coins during the performance.

Many people are allergic to perfumes and colognes. Please go lightly.

If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.

If several performers or groups are performing, please stay for all. It is rude to leave between performers.

A quick departure is noticed by everyone in the audience and especially by the performers on stage. Please wait until the house lights go up to leave.

ALL tobacco products, including vapor cigarettes, and lighters of any kind are prohibited in the GEM Theatre.

Outside food and drink is NOT allowed in the GEM Theatre.

Be courteous and everyone will enjoy the performance!

Theatre Etiquette

Children in the theatre

Attending a theatre performance or movie can be a magical and memorable experience for even young children. Done well, you will be planting the seeds of appreciation in a young patron for a love of theatre. Done poorly, you can create an awful experience for your child and the people seated around you.

First, take time to select the proper show for your child to see. It would be unfair to ask your child to behave their best if you have selected a show that would bore them or that they do not understand. In some cases it might be cheaper to hire a babysitter and make it a date night instead. Infants should always be left at home, as there is not distraction to performers or audience members quite like a crying baby.

Here are some general guidelines that should be mentioned prior to attending the theatre to prepare your child to present the proper behavior everyone will be expecting from him or her:

They will be expected to be quiet, sit still in their own seat, and not disturb others around them by talking or fidgeting.

They will need to keep their feet on the floor, not on the seats around them. They should not kick the chair in front of them or stand during the performance.

They should not leave the theatre except during intermission and then only with their parent (s) or guardian.

They may applaud when appropriate.

Also mention to your children that the theatre will be dark and sudden bursts of sounds may occur.

If your child becomes restless, frightened, or very loud, please take them to the lobby. Please remember that our lobby is not sound proof and loud noise will travel into the theatre. You may always ask an usher to reseat you towards the back of the theatre/balcony.

The GEM Theatre has a fully accessible concession area on the main floor. For some performances an additional concessions area is opened on the Balcony level. This area is accessible only by stairs.
